Disaster Preparedness

If you live anywhere on the East Coast, no doubt hurricanes are a concern for you. As we enter the height of hurricane season, it would be beneficial to refresh our knowledge of these terrible storms. In the Atlantic, hurricane season stretches from June 1st until November 30th.  The most likely time for hurricanes to arise is in the middle of the months of August and September.  Hurricanes can be a big issue here in North Carolina.  It is no coincidence that the professional hockey team, based in Raleigh, is named The Hurricanes.  North Carolina is right up hurricane alley.  The more we know about suchcolossal storms, the better able we are to prepare for them.

Hurricanes are appropriately named after Huracan, the Carib Indians’ god of evil.  They are immense storms of destruction and fury that leave desolation in their wakes.  The hurricane is a subcategory of a tropical cyclone.  Cyclones are defined by NOAA as “rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed low-level circulation.” In the Northern Hemisphere, tropical cyclones rotate counterclockwise.  A hurricane is a cyclone with maximum sustained wind speeds that exceed 111 mph.  They are classified as either category 3, 4, or 5 depending on the wind speed.  Usually category 3 hurricanes can be weathered without extreme discomfort, but if a category 4 or 5 makes landfall, seeking storm shelters is advised, and evacuation may be necessary.

The safety of you and your family is your number one priority in a disaster situation, but if you can plan ahead, why not take steps to insure the safety of your documents?  Surely overlooking the safekeeping of sensitive or private files would be a tragic mistake.  If only you had some way that you could insure your documents remained safe from natural disasters like hurricanes?  Wouldn’t you like to rest easy knowing your property is in good hands?  Well thankfully for you, Tarheel Imaging and Microfilming specializes in securing files from harm due to flooding, fire, theft, or wind damage.  We utilize secure warehouse storage to protect your documents.  We also have implemented state-of-the-art Electronic Document Management Systems as a backup to ensure that even if something should happen to the physical documents that we protect, we would still have an electronic copy.
